Varna, Bulgaria, November 8, 2016. After cruising to a 3-0 victory last week on home soil, Dutch national champions Abiant Lycurgus GRONINGEN needed to take ‘only’ two sets from their re-match with Bulgaria’s Dobrudja 07 DOBRICH and so they did to progress to the third round of the 2017 CEV Volleyball Champions League – Men and play there Noliko MAASEIK of Belgium. Though the Bulgarians eventually celebrated a 3-2 victory (25-19, 24-26, 27-25, 19-25, 15-13), the fate of this double header was already determined after the Dutchmen took the fourth set.

Arjan Taaij, head coach of Abiant Lycurgus GRONINGEN, said: “I think the team of Dobrudja have a lot of potential. They are very young, yet extremely talented. In my opinion they will grow this season and these coming years as well. I wish them the best of luck for their future endeavours.”

Dimitar Marinkov, outside spiker of Dobrudja 07 DOBRICH: “I want to thank all the people from Dobrich and all other fans in attendance tonight. I am very sorry I could not help my team in the previous match we played last week in the Netherlands.”

His teammate Trifon Lapkov added: “We had to fight back in this second match and as a result we showed more power. The team of Abiant, on the other hand, looked more relaxed because they knew in advance that they just needed to take two sets to make it through to the next round. I think that the match we played tonight went a lot easier for us also thanks to the support provided by our fans.”

Galin Gospodinov, chairman of Dobrudja 07 DOBRICH: “I would like to congratulate the team on their victory tonight. The match was a very close and competitive one and we are happy that we could celebrate a victory in what is our first ever participation in the CEV Volleyball Champions League. I wish the team of Abiant Lycurgus the best of luck for their next matches in this elite competition.”
